A number of significant changes concerning the minimum wage are approaching. We have outlined these changes and their implications for you as an employer.

Changes to the Minimum Wage and Why

From 1 January 2024, the introduction of the minimum hourly wage will be implemented. This will affect the calculation of the minimum wage. The change is intended to create a fairer remuneration system. Currently, the government determines the monthly minimum wage. However, this is not truly equitable as different sectors operate with varying working weeks. For this reason, the minimum hourly wage will be introduced.

This new legislation marks the end of the legally prescribed minimum daily, weekly, and monthly wages. Instead, there will be one uniform minimum hourly wage to which all employees in the Netherlands are entitled. As a result of this change, employees working a 40-hour week will earn more than those working a 36-hour week. This means that the hourly wage, rather than the monthly wage, will become the basis.

What Does This Mean for You as an Employer?

Due to the introduction of the minimum hourly wage, labour costs will increase from 1 January 2024. Additionally, adjustments will be made to collective labour agreements (CLAs), employment contracts, and payroll administration.

The minimum hourly wage that will apply across all sectors for individuals aged 21 and over from 1 January 2024 will be €13.27 per hour. This is a regular indexation; the minimum wage increases every six months in line with CLA wages. Concurrently with the introduction of the minimum hourly wage, the statutory minimum wage will also increase by 3.75% from 1 January 2024.

How Can GJ GROEP, Assist You?

We support entrepreneurs like you by connecting you with HR advisors who are up-to-date with the latest laws, regulations, and collective labour agreements within your industry.
