Why use a checklist and what are the benefits?

Using a checklist can not only help to gain a better overview of the things you (still) need to do, but it also ensures that you can minimise making mistakes. In honour of Checklist Day, we have listed the benefits of using a checklist.

Overview

Creating a checklist – also known as a to-do list – provides an overview. We all know those days when we feel like the work just keeps piling up and we don’t know where to start. By drawing up a checklist, you can note these tasks clearly one below the other, giving you a better overview of the things you still need to do.

By writing things down, you also create space in your head. Because you write things down, you are, as it were, clearing your mind. In addition, you can see at a glance what has already been done and what is still required, so you do not have to keep repeating this in your head.

Satisfaction

Besides the fact that creating a checklist gives a better overview of the things you still need to do, it also provides satisfaction. Because you can cross off/tick off items, you get a good picture of all the tasks you have already completed. This can lead to a sense of accomplishment.

Saving time

By creating a checklist, you can save a lot of time. You can easily check what you still need to do, so you don’t constantly lose time remembering which tasks you had to do and which you have already finished. In addition, if you have a long checklist, you can also subdivide it into days, for example. You can then distribute the tasks over different days, allowing you to organise your time efficiently.

Minimising errors

When you have to complete multiple tasks, the risk of forgetting things is greater. By creating a checklist, you can prevent yourself from forgetting things and you can focus on one task at a time. You only move on to the next task once the current one is finished. In this way, you not only ensure that you cannot forget things, but you are more focused on what you are doing at that moment.

Tips for creating a checklist

  • Create multiple checklists; for your daily tasks, but also for projects where you can also note the sub-tasks
  • Try to subdivide the checklist into days and weeks;
  • Use a separate notebook for your checklists so that you don’t get things mixed up.
