Meaning in work
Where work used to be primarily intended to generate a stable income, employees now increasingly want to get more out of their work. They strive to develop themselves as much as possible and, moreover, wish to contribute to society. Put simply, employees are looking for meaning in their work. Are you an employee or employer seeking meaning in your own work or that of your employees? We can help you with this.
What does meaning signify?
Meaning is the significance that life gives you. Some important questions to ask yourself are: what gives my life meaning? Who am I? and why do I do what I do? Meaning is a fundamental human need. If the need for meaning is not met, people generally experience a lower quality of life. You often do not notice these consequences acutely, but they creep in slowly. You frequently see that people who have just recovered from burnout organise their lives in a completely different way, in a way that gives them more satisfaction than before.
Why is meaning important in work?
Since you spend a large part of your life at work, it is important that your work contributes to the meaning of your life. You do not just want a job that pays well, but also work that suits you and gives you satisfaction. You do not want to be bored, but rather to constantly take on new challenges.
You can derive meaning in your work, for example, from contact with colleagues or helping people. Meaning is not a fixed concept. What you understand by meaning can continue to change throughout your life. Furthermore, everyone defines the meaning of the concept ‘purpose’ in their own way.
Do you find purpose in your work?
Are you wondering if you derive enough meaning from your work? Then take the time to reflect on which goals you want to achieve in your career and whether that is possible in your current job. Also think carefully about how you feel when you go to work or when the weekend is almost over. Do you dread going back to work, or are you actually looking forward to it?
By truly reflecting on job satisfaction – or the lack thereof – you can determine how you derive the most meaning from your work. Are you already satisfied? Then by all means continue. If you are not satisfied, you can consider whether you can make small changes within your current job to get more meaning out of your work. Think about taking on different tasks or perhaps even changing jobs entirely.
