It can be difficult to get back into your work rhythm after enjoying a relaxing holiday. On the first day back, you are faced with work that needs to be caught up on, an overflowing inbox, meetings, and tasks that you are not quite ready for yet. Starting work is tough after your holiday! We at GJ GROEP would like to give you a few smart tips for a successful first day back at work.

1: Prepare a day in advance

The morning of your first day back will run more smoothly and be more relaxed if you have already done the necessary preparation the day before. Lay out your work clothes, pack your bag, and gather everything you need so that you do not have to search for your laptop, important documents, or office keys the next morning. Also, create a to-do list with important points that you really must address on your first day. This way, you will start your first day back more calmly and with more confidence.

2: Plan a quiet start to the first day

It can be beneficial to get up slightly earlier than you normally would on workdays. This gives you just a little more time on your first day back to take things easy. You will have enough time to shower, get dressed and ready, enjoy your breakfast, and briefly watch, listen to, or read the news. By taking this extra time for yourself, you can start the day feeling more relaxed.

3: Block out the morning for reorientation

It is advisable to block out the morning, by which we primarily mean not scheduling any appointments with others during this time. Reserve the morning to carry out your own tasks without interruptions. Consider, for example, performing your initial tasks, answering all incoming emails, and setting priorities. Take some time to reorient yourself.

4: Start with simple tasks

Begin your first day back with simple tasks that do not require much concentration. It is good to start with tasks that you can complete easily and quickly. This helps you get back into the ‘work mindset’ without having too much expected of you immediately. By completing smaller tasks quickly first, you will feel more productive and be well-prepared to tackle larger and more difficult tasks.

5: Make time for social interaction

You haven’t seen your colleagues for a while. You have likely missed some fun or interesting developments, and you will have great experiences of your own that you want to share. Be sure to set aside some time for social interaction on your first day back. It is good to catch up with your team or colleagues. This makes the day feel lighter and reduces feelings of stress.

6: Do not schedule major meetings or presentations

Major meetings or presentations often involve a lot of pressure and stress. Try to avoid these on your first day back to prevent becoming overwhelmed. Schedule important meetings or presentations later in the week, so that you have sufficient time to prepare. It is a pleasant way to get yourself back on track at work without the added pressure.

7: Be patient with yourself

It is difficult to start working again after your holiday. You have to transition from relaxation mode back into work mode. This is simply challenging for everyone. Therefore, do not set the bar too high, keep your expectations realistic, and above all, be patient with yourself. If things aren’t perfect straight away, just shrug it off and keep going. In this way, you will gradually rebuild your productivity and things will naturally improve.

8: Evaluate and plan the week ahead

Did you start back on Monday? By Friday, you will notice that the working week has gone by much faster than you expected. In the end, it wasn’t so bad after all. This is a good time to look back on the week and evaluate. Review what you have achieved and plan the tasks for next week. You will see that the second week already feels like business as usual.
