Applying the PERMA Model for Mental Well-being in the Workplace

The PERMA model can be applied within companies and organisations to improve the mental well-being of employees. This psychological model was developed by Martin Seligman, a psychologist who, among other things, dedicated himself to creating a more positive work environment. How do you implement it within your own company or organisation? GJ GROEP would be pleased to tell you more.

What exactly is the PERMA model?

The PERMA model focuses on the five elements crucial for mental well-being: Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Achievement. This model can be applied at both individual and organisational levels. We will briefly review the five elements with you.

Positive Feeling

Positive emotion, sometimes described as positive feeling, represents the experience of positive emotions. This includes satisfaction, joy, and pleasure in daily life. Positive emotions help employees better manage stress and promote their overall well-being.

Engagement

Engagement refers to involvement and the way an individual becomes absorbed in their work. It is important for employees to be truly engaged in the work they do, allowing them to enter a ‘flow state’ when performing tasks. This ensures people feel more connected to their work, making them more productive.

Relations

Relations refers to the relationships that occur at work, such as those between colleagues and between employees and managers. For well-being, it is important that these relationships are considered good and positive. This fosters a positive work atmosphere where everyone feels socially secure.

Meaning

Meaning is about the feeling that work has value and that tasks contribute to a larger whole. Employees must feel that the work they do is meaningful and contributes to achieving important goals within the organisation. This leads to better motivation and a greater sense of satisfaction.

Achievement

Achievement refers to accomplishment, also known as reaching goals and experiencing success. It is very important for employee well-being that they regularly achieve successes, which increases their self-confidence and pride. Setting clear goals, providing positive feedback, appreciation, and recognition are crucial in this regard.

Advantages of the PERMA Model

The PERMA model offers several advantages, primarily because it emphasises developing a healthy, safe, and enjoyable work environment. This helps employees gain more satisfaction from their work, making them more engaged, more productive, and also less likely to be absent due to illness. The PERMA model is easy to apply and can be adapted to specific company cultures and needs.

Implementing the PERMA Model in the Workplace

Implement the PERMA model in the workplace to enhance employee well-being and thus achieve an optimal work atmosphere. It is best to first provide training in applying the PERMA model to managers and the HR department, after which it can be integrated into daily work processes. This creates a supportive work environment where employees are able to build stronger relationships. Please contact us for assistance with this.
